If you are allergic to cotton but choose to wear it because of mulitiple allergies, or reasons of cost or practicality, certain types of cotton fabric are less troublesome than others.
Cotton causes allergy when you inhale, or come into contact with, the cotton flock – the small particles given off from the fibre. You can avoid cotton flock by wearing only very smooth cotton fabrics, such as cotton jersey, poplins and lawns. Avoid fibrous cotton such as knitted cotton sweaters, fine flocky underwear, or towelling. Some people tolerate cotton corduroy and cotton fleece fabric (tracksuit material) quite well, even though they are a bit flocky.
